Course Information
Where balls go to get lost.
Palm Course
Opened in 1989, this Palmer design features views of Red Rock and the Strip. Not a long layout, it challenges with difficult putting surfaces, perfectly positioned sand bunkers, and precise par 3’s.
Mountain Course
Opened in 1990, this Palmer design is slightly longer and more difficult than the Palm. It demands great focus on its challenging putting surfaces and beautiful par 4's and 5's.
At almost 3,000 feet in elevation, Angel Park offers spectacular views of Red Rock Canyon and the Las Vegas Valley.
The Rules
Guidelines for optimal tomfoolery.
1. The Rookie Rule
If you win the tournament as a rookie, you must choose to either:
a) Forfeit the victory to the runner-up, or
b) Keep the victory and never return again.
2. The Wife Rule
You can elect to bring a wife to the GWO… just not your own wife.
Our History
How this all got so out of hand.
Over four decades ago, a bakers dozen of hackers, mostly pals from Torrance, California, decided to gather for a golf getaway at Pala Mesa, near San Diego. We thought it would probably be a "one and done", but a year later, we found ourselves in Las Vegas having a blast at GWO II.
The Great White Open has endured for decades, growing from a few foursomes to the raggedy band of doctors and derelicts that comprise our current roster. We have ventured north, east, south into the badlands of Tijuana, and west...hell, all the rest have been mostly in San Diego County.
Over the years, we have created a vault of memories, mostly good...mostly. The oldsters know the history and the NFG's (New Fucking Guys) pick up a little more every year. Every year, each GWO participant adds to the ongoing story.
Players have come and gone. A fair amount of the 1981 originals still participate. We lost two legends, Steve Coleman and Simon Dwyer, who are now chipping out of clouds in Heaven. What is cool is that Steve's son, Branden, and Simon's son, Ryan, have been a part of our little gathering for years.
The Great White Open started as a lark and has endured. Our little soiree is just the excuse for a group of friends, new and old, to gather for a weekend of camaraderie, healing waters, and, oh yeah, a little bit of golf.
Love,
The Great White
